UC4 1

The highly anticipated next entry in the critically acclaimed Uncharted series was finally released on May 10, 2016, for the PlayStation 4 platform and it is every bit as good as was expected.

Gameplay

The game runs really smooth with an extremely impressive frame rate which just doesn’t seem to drop no matter what. We get to play the game from a third-person perspective and play as Nathan Drake for the majority of the game; we also take control of Sam for some parts of the game, and of course, Crash Bandicoot. While we have not been spoilt for choice when it comes to armaments, the ones given to us manage to get the job done. Stealth has been beautifully integrated into the game, and there are certain chapters where you can stealth your way through for the most part. Certain parts of some chapters will make you want to rip out your hair out of frustration. There are 22 chapters in the game, not including a prologue and an epilogue. Here’s a quick look the chapters:

Prologue

  1. The Lure of Adventure
  2. Infernal Place
  3. The Malaysia Job
  4. A Normal Life
  5. Hector Alcazar
  6. Once a Thief…
  7. Lights Out
  8. The Grave of Henry Avery
  9. Those Who Prove Worthy
  10. The Twelve Towers
  11. Hidden in Plain Sight
  12. At Sea
  13. Marooned
  14. Join Me in Paradise
  15. The Thieves of Libertalia
  16. The Brothers Drake
  17. For Better or Worse
  18. New Devon
  19. Avery’s Descent
  20. No Escape
  21. Brother’s Keeper
  22. A Thief’s End

Epilogue

The first, second, fifth and sixteenth chapters are flashbacks. While the first and sixteenth missions take us to the Drake brothers’ childhood, the story really starts to move forward from the second mission and the fifth mission immerses us further into the life of Samuel Drake.

*Chapter 20*

Make sure to stock up on ammo before you start the aptly named chapter 20, a whole lot of ammo and a big chunk of good fortune is what you’re going to need to get through this chapter.

Graphics

The graphical crispness of the world depicted in the game is truly magnificent. It is readily understandable that attention was given to the minutest details. And the character animations appear non-existent, just because it sometimes feels you are not playing a game, but in fact controlling real people that you see on your console monitor, such is the realistic feel of the characters seen the game. From the smallest twitch of their facial muscle to a misjudged leap of faith into oblivion, it seems that the protagonist may turn around to look at you and admonish you for playing the game poorly or congratulate you for a move well done at any given time.

Moving forward for the Franchise

It’s a pity that Naughty Dog have decided to do away with the Uncharted franchise, but at least there is some consolation in the fact that they saved their best for last. Uncharted 4:  A Thief’s End sometimes comes across as a novel that you enjoy reading so much that you don’t want it to end, but with every page you turn you know the remaining number of pages are constantly on a diminishing trend. Go ahead and immerse yourself into the game, it is every bit worth all the hype that surrounded its release.

The Good

  • Smooth gameplay
  • Stunning graphics
  • Feels epic at times

The Bad

  • Chapters feel unnecessarily dragged out at times.
  • Certain plot-holes at places.
